Department of Chemistry

Hours per week:

Application deadline:
30 June 2024
We seek temporary researchers with transdisciplinary and self-starting research skills to work for a period of maximal half a year on the ‘Rethink Hydrogen’ project.

The
seeks to hire a researcher
who can commit to (max) 4 days a week for a period of approximately 6 months in the second half of 2024.

Your job

One of the research positions is focused on the role of PEM electrolysers as a key technology in large scale offshore green hydrogen production and the (technical) challenges of upscaling this technology in harsh North Sea conditions.

As researcher you will support the transdisciplinary ‘Rethink Hydrogen’ team, by performing research on energy-system and/or technical aspects of large off-shore hydrogen production. The research outputs and outcomes are input for the Hydrogen Living Lab and collaboration with the HKU. We seek creative and critical thinkers with excellent research- and teamwork skills with interest in the ‘green’ hydrogen value chain and related economic, societal and environmental challenges and opportunities. The positions are ideal for researchers who are preparing for, or extending, a PhD trajectory.

Your responsibilities will be as follows:
  • developing and elaborating on draft research questions and methods;
  • conducting a (literature) study on the impact of the harsh North Sea conditions and fluctuating energy input of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) on dynamic operation of PEM electrolyser, lifetime, and related impacts;
  • co-organisation of workshops with the Rethink Hydrogen team.

Your qualities

We are looking for an enthusiastic junior researcher who meets several or all of the following criteria:
  • a master's degree in a subject relevant to the researcher position e.g. energy systems, chemistry or physics;
  • the ability to review and analyse literature from an interdisciplinary perspective;
  • a professional attitude and behavior that includes reliability, a pro-active mindset, integrity, precision, good communication skills and collegiality;
  • being pro-active and self-starting in developing research approaches and in grasping opportunities for the Living Lab.
Relevant extracurricular projects that show independent critical research skills would be a plus.

Our offer

We offer:
  • a temporary job for 6 months;
  • an interesting research team and project;
  • a working week between 20 and 36 hours and a full-time gross salary between €2.618,- and €3.298,- (salary scale 6, 7, 8 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU));
  • 8% holiday pay and 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.
In addition to the
