Project Manager Contest

for

0.9 to 1.0 fte

| Vacancy for a Paid position, Full-time, Part-time | Deadline:

06-05-2024

The World Press Photo Foundation believes in the power of showing and the importance of seeing high-quality visual stories. Our purpose is to connect the world to the stories that matter.

For over six decades, the World Press Photo Foundation has been working from its home in Amsterdam as an independent, nonprofit organization. In that time, the world has changed continuously, and new developments in the media and technology have transformed journalism and photography. Our mission has expanded, and we draw on our experience to guide photojournalists, documentary photographers, and audiences around the world through this challenging and exciting landscape.

Our annual contest recognizes and celebrates the best photojournalism and documentary photography produced over the last year. In 2021, we launched a new strategy and are now implementing a regional model to all our activities in order to better represent the ‘world’. The contest is now organized into six regions – Africa, Asia, Europe, North and Central America, South America and Southeast Asia and Oceania – and entries are reviewed by independent regional and global juries. The winning stories are shared with an online community of over 2.5 million people, in the yearbook and our traveling exhibition, which was showcased in 66 locations in 29 different countries last year.

The World Press Photo Foundation is currently looking for a project manager contest, starting in June of this year.

Project Manager Contest

0.9 to 1.0 FTE (36 to 40 hours per week) | starting at the beginning of June
The contest, which the Foundation has organized since 1955, is at the heart of everything we do. It falls under the Programs department that is currently made up of four team members dedicated to facilitating the photo contest, winners program, educational programs and outreach activities. Managing it would mean working together with the international documentary and photojournalism sector, from global picture editors to world-renowned photographers, as well as underrepresented talent.

The Project Manager Contest will be responsible for essential parts of the photo contest during the planning and implementation of the contest, the production period and the winners event. Next to the contest projects, the project manager contest will also work on education and outreach projects, like our Joop Swart Masterclass, and various workshops, trainings and outreach events, through which we educate the profession and the public on the making of the stories that matter around the world, and encourage debate on their meaning.

We work in a detail oriented way, with the bigger picture always in mind. What motivates us is providing a platform for the best work in photojournalism and to facilitate the processes that enables us to share those stories. Over the coming years the team plans to further build on the regional model with finding new partnerships in the regions, increasing submissions from underrepresented regions through outreach, and organizing local networking events.

Your tasks

  • General responsibility for strategy, set up, planning and implementation of the contest, including jury selection, preparation and supporting the regional and main jury etc.
  • Responsible for planning and implementing elements of the photo contest, such as
  • Setting up the contest (rules, categories, jury selection, judging platform etc.);

  • Coordinate elements of the winners program and other events (i.e. lectures, meetings, panels).
  • Manage education and outreach projects and events
  • Coordinating parts of the Joop Swart Masterclass;
