About your role

Our subgroup focuses on the preservation of kidneys
ex vivo
with the ultimate goal to increase the number of available donor grafts and facilitate kidney resuscitation, modulation and regeneration. As a PhD-candidate, the aim of your project involves genetic modification of kidneys

ex vivo
to reduce inflammatory damage and improve organ quality. You will set up different sets of experiments ranging from cell and whole organ culture to the exploration of various read-outs with an in-depth multi-omics approach (e.g. metabolomics, lipidomics).

About you

  • Strong academic interest with a background in Medicine and/or Biomedical Sciences (preferably in both).
  • Experience with translational research and spent time in a laboratory during one of your (bio)medical internships.
  • Ability to work independently and like to take initiative in shaping the vision and direction of your own projects.
  • Strong communication skills and flexibility, thriving in a collaborative small research group environment.
  • Excellent English writing and communication skills.

Our offer

Driven by health; that's our mission. This applies not only to our patients but also to our employees. With Future@Work, we guarantee a pleasant working environment and provide room for development. In order to be able to continue to learn and develop, we offer internal and external training. You are also entitled to an end-of-year bonus (8,3%), holiday allowance, sports budget and bicycle scheme. Furthermore, as an employee of LUMC, you are also affiliated with the ABP pension fund. This means that 70% of your pension premium is paid by LUMC, leaving you with a higher net salary. Nice, right?

About your workplace

You will be working in the Nephrology section, Department of Internal Medicine. The Nephrology section provides top-tier care to individuals with kidney disease. To further optimize this care, (bio)medical, translational research is conducted to study kidney health and disease. Our research group focuses on understanding kidney pathophysiology, improvement of current care (i.e. dialysis and kidney transplantation) and (re)generation of functional kidney tissue within the laboratory.

The Nephrology research team forms an interdisciplinary group with medical specialists, researchers, PhD candidates and research technicians. We collaborate closely with other departments, such as the LUMC Transplantation Center and the LUMC Center for Proteomics and Metabolomics. Also, being part of the reNEW consortium allows for an international collaboration with investigators across the different research nodes in Copenhagen and Melbourne.

What do we represent?

Our health is our greatest asset. Unlike any other profession, in healthcare, you can fully appreciate the entire spectrum of humanity in all its breadth. LUMC, as an academic medical center, wholeheartedly embraces that diversity! We strive for the highest quality in healthcare, education, and (international) research. We aim to be a creative and inspiring workplace. It is essential that everyone feels at home, safe, and recognized. That is why the LUMC was the first academic medical center to partner with Workplace Pride. Our active network, LUMC Pride, is dedicated to optimal inclusivity and diversity within our organization. Regardless of origin, gender, appearance, age, identity, orientation, (physical) disability, or faith, you are a valuable part of our organization. Together, we are LUMC.
